S002: Sassoon® Primary Infant Starter fonts
Recommended for Reception Classes

[Specially designed]

We call this selection of fonts from our range 'starter' because we believe every teacher should begin
teaching with these. Purchase price includes PostScript Type 1 AND TrueType fonts, licensed for up to 5 CPUs.

Tracker B font, with its direction arrows helps pupils to start in the correct place.
Motor movements can be refined by keeping inside the line.
When starting and direction is no problem, the arrow can be dropped and the plain Tracker font used.

To refine motor movement, Dotted B, with its direction arrow, again reminds pupils where to start
and gives pupils confidence when tracking more closely over the dots. Larger dots mark the pen down points.

When start points and direction are remembered, Dotted, without the starting arrow can be used.

When start points are remembered, direction remembered and motor movement is sufficiently refined, pupils
are ready to 'copy', rather than tracker over the letters. Words can be set in the Infant font and a
baseline placed underneath for pupils to write what they see.

The Medium weighted font can be used to emphasis particular letters within a word, or used at smaller
sizes to make the letters heavy enough to be legible.

found in all Sassoon fonts, as shown in the samples below.

The letterforms are not meant as an exact handwriting model.
It is more accurate to describe them as representations of handwritten letterforms.

Sassoon's exit strokes form the basis of the joining stroke.
They contribute towards an efficient and mature joined-up handwriting.

Starting points can be added to show the direction of strokes
and the letterforms can be reproduced larger and on colour or outline
for tracking exercises. Letters up to A4 size can be printed to make
a frieze for the wall. All this can be easily done on a computer enabling
parents and teachers to develop their own professional-looking
handwriting material to suit their chosen policy.

Tracking a large type size such as 250 points,
is recommended for all 'finger tracking' exercises,
which should be done with the forefinger and middle finger
held together and the movement should involve the whole arm.

[Dotted]
Print the Sassoon Infant at a comfortable size for reading (24 point).
Print Sassoon Infant Dotted at a larger size (60pt) if letters are to be tracked in pencil.
Where there is only one large dot, the pencil does not leave the page until the letter is finished.
Where there is more than one large dot, the pencil is lifted and placed on the next large dot.
[Tracker]
Use chevrons, arrows or dots inside the Tracker outline letters
to indicate how the letter is formed. Using coloured pencils to track is fun
and also produces a satisfying result .
[Dotted]
(note the use of an alternative k).

Shaded or coloured Sassoon Infant Medium letters may be used instead of Dotted or Tracker
to emphasise consonants or vowels in a moveable alphabet. For example, on sheets of printed card.

[Figures]
Coloured dots can be used to emphasise the starting points of strokes.

[Alternatives]
Each typeface has the same alternative letters available within each font.
