This package has been complied to provide a complete resource for Reception Class and Primary teaching. It includes both reading and handwriting fonts. Each font reinforces the last, building a progressive approach to teaching. Together, these fonts bridge the gap for children between reading and handwriting. These Primary fonts were researched with children and designed specifically for young readers. There are 12 separate-letter fonts:

Sassoon Primary
Those learning to read require friendly, easily recognisable letters with adequate descenders and ascenders These ensure a well defined word shape. 'Exit strokes' help clump letters together along the baseline giving unity to words.


Sassoon Primary Medium
This slightly heavier weight of letter may be used instead of the Regular for smaller text, or on large wall friezes where the thicker line weight is more appropriate.


Sassoon Primary Bold
This may be better than italic for early readers to provide emphasis within a text. It can also be used as a headline font and is useful for indicating phonic pairs.




Sassoon Primary Condensed Medium
Ideal for headings, where space is at a premium, but impact is still required, this compact friendly style retains adequate ascenders and descenders that can be lacking in other headline types.


The following fonts are meant for use when teaching handwriting

Sassoon Infant Tracker B
Children can learn and practise the starting point and direction of strokes within this outline font.




Sassoon Infant Tracker
When they are ready, you can dispense with the dot and arrow. Children enjoy tracking within both outlines with multiple strokes of different coloured pencils.



Sassoon Infant Dotted B
Dotted B, with its direction arrow, reminds pupils where to start and gives pupils confidence when tracking more closely over the dots. Larger dots mark the pen down points.




Sassoon Infant Dotted
Next, the Dotted font without the starting arrow can then be used as children become familiar and more acurate with the exercise.



Sassoon Infant Line
When start points are remembered, direction remembered and motor movement is sufficiently refined, pupils are ready to 'copy', rather than tracker over the letters. Words can be set in the Infant Line font and a baseline placed underneath for pupils to write what they see.


Sassoon Infant
When the correct movement of letters is established, this font can be used to produce any exercises required until the children are ready to start learning to join up. We do not, provide a font with tramlines which would dictate a standard size of script. This would always be a disadvatage to those whose natural writing, for whatever reason, is either larger or smaller than the double lines. Some teachers prefer to set exercises indicating a baseline. The 'Line' font is recommended instead.


Sassoon Infant Medium
Provides emphasis for letters within words or words within sentances. At larger sizes it can be used as a headline font as an alternative to italic.



Sassoon Infant Bold
Provides emphasis for letters within words or words within sentances at smaller sizes. Useful to indiacte phonic pairs. At larger sizes it can be used as a headline font as an alternative to Medium.

We've been listening to User's feedback! It has taken over two years of development to create a family of fonts for use with any OpenType 'savvy' application, for example MS-Word (at least version 2010). Check that your application is OpenType compatible.

Just install the fonts and start entering text to see it join. What makes these fonts so different is the few but important alternative letters which influence the way letters join. They reflect the many joining methods needed to demonstrate a variety of joins correctly. This not only gives teachers choices for the joins they prefer, but also, which joins are most suitable for their pupils.

Different 'Sets' can be chosen for whether important letters such as t and f have baseline, cross-bar or mixed joining strokes. Sets can be saved permanently for future use each time your program, is opened. Easily introduce a pen lift (joining-break) wherever you wish. Use your favourite program to Save, Print, Copy, Format colour, Size, Paragraphs etc., in a familiar environment with no retraining.

All fonts are based on the Sassoon Primary separate letters, so can be left unjoined if required. Joins Letterforms and their joins are the same whichever font is used.

Sassoon Linked Line and Sassoon Linked - fonts have outlined links to show how to join the separate letters, with or without a a baseline.

Sassoon Joined Line and Sassoon Joined - the same letterforms as the previous fonts but with solid links to show the finished result.

Sassoon Pen Line and Sassoon Pen - are a more mature style, showing what can be achieved with experience and speed, but not so slick as to be intimidating to pupils.

Words with these continuous joins can be copied by pupils on worksheets. Teachers can leave some letters unjoined to allow penlifts wherever needed. Alternative letters (Stylistic Sets) can be applied to customise letterforms and their joins.
