Sassoon® Cambridge Joiner application and fonts
Following the successful use of Sassoon typefaces in schools since 1988, several Sassoon typefaces have been developed for different purposes as a result of market led requests, some for reading, some for writing and covering an age and ability range found within Infant, Primary and Secondary schools. A mature 'joined-up' hand is the result of correct instruction from an early age. The Sassoon Joiner typefaces are 'fonts' and as such can only represent joined handwriting. They are not handwriting models, but instructional letterforms. The joined typefaces have built on the initial concept of Sassoon working towards a more comprehensive handwriting solution for schools and teachers.

Our collaboration with Cambridge University Press has resulted in a modified version of the application tailored specially to the Penpals for Handwriting scheme. Create your own worksheets and extend the examples of the Penapals for Handwriting books to suit your teaching.

A font alone is not sufficient to create correct joining strokes. Such fonts have 'resting' strokes, compromised letterforms that attenpt to role several types of join into one and even OpenType fonts have a pre-set logic built-in. A single font cannot respond to events 'on-the-fly'. An application such as Sassoon® Cambridge Joiner is needed to assess which join is used with the starting letter and the next letter. Even when joins have been calculated for a word, the joins may be changed in view of the Preferences set by the User or the combination of letters.

Sassoon® Cambridge Joiner has been designed for simplicity of use. Joined text is created by running the program, setting your Preferences, entering your text in an Edit window and clicking 'Join'. The program calculates the joins and presents them for Saving, Printing or Copying. Now 'Copy' the text and switch to your favourite program for page layout (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, AppleWorks etc, etc, or any program that has a font menu). Select 'Paste' to have the joined text appear, then carry on formatting colour, size, paragraphs etc., in your favourite program.

From the main menu, select which of the four typefaces with which to work.
Each level provides a text editor window that uses specific typefaces (fonts).
The example pages we supply can be used as the starting point for your own worksheets.

Level 1: Sassoon Primary font is (unjoined) for early learners.
Level 2: Sassoon Primary Linked has outlined links to show where to join.
Level 3: Sassoon Primary Joined Script has continuous solid joins.
Level 4: Sassoon Pen Script is a more mature flexible instructional typeface.
Worksheet Editor: Use any 'Joiner' typefaces to compose worksheets.

Level 1 Editor uses the Sassoon Primary typeface for unjoined, simple words and combinations.

Level 2
Level 2
When Level 2 'Join' button is pressed, the text appears in the joined wiindow
as Sassoon Primary Linked. Fully joined with outlined links to show where to join.
Here it has also been changed to a type size of 72 points.
To correct spelling, click 'Revert' to go back to the input window.

Level 3 Editor uses Sassoon Primary Joined Script. A fully joined instructional typeface.

Level 4 Editor uses Sassoon Pen Script. A fully joined more mature flexible typeface.


Features of Joiner allow the User to:
  • Input text in a window
  • Import or Paste existing text into the Text Editor
  • Spell check a single words or story against 100,000 word Dictionary
  • Add new words to a User Defined Dictionary for use in spell checking
  • Set preferences about how letters should look when joined.
  • Press the 'Join' button to display the 'joined-up' text
  • Print the result to a Printer
  • Paste your joined text into any other applications' document
  • Save the input text as a separate plain text file for later import
  • Access a 'Help' feature describing each feature of the application and how to use it

To achieve joined text the application requires only the installation
of the special Sassoon® fonts made for use only in this application.
No custom drivers or keyboard software is needed!
